Historical Fiction
Historical Fiction novels are stories that are set during time periods and events of the past. Nazi Germany during World War II, Moscow during the Stalin era, an Italian monastery in the year 1327.
These types of novels are extremely difficult to write. Not only is the writer weaving an intricate story but they’re also recreating a past world to encompass it. Doing this well gives the reader an extremely fulfilling experience. We’re allowed to travel back in time and experience worlds that once existed. That in itself would be rewarding, but we’re also allowed to experience the journey and travel with powerful characters we come to respect, admire, love and cheer for.
Book vs. movie
Books are often adapted into screenplays and made into films that are lauded for their plots. While these two mediums both create powerful emotional responses for us, they do so in completely different ways. Because of this, the debate over which medium is better to tell any one story will forever continue.
We are an independent bookstore that was built out of our love for the written literary world. Yet one of its’ founders also holds a BA degree in Film, so one can imagine the table talk on this subject. We’ve concluded that whichever medium you experience first, will be your first love. However, if that first experience is the film adaptation, you’ve missed out on some powerful storytelling. Don’t cheat yourself of the experience, and read the book. Then you can decide for yourself.

Graphic Novels
Graphic Novels can be fiction, fantasy, history, horror, romance... or basically any story at all. These illustrated stories are a great way to motivate reluctant readers!
People often confuse them with comics or manga (Japanese word for 'comic') because of their similarities. Graphic Novels do encompass both of those terms so you'll often find Comics or Manga grouped under Graphic Novels. Consider the terms instead as a style of storytelling. All are illustrated stories, but while Comics and Manga are usually series driven, a Graphic Novel is a stand alone story...a novel. And while we read novels left to right in English, a Manga is read from top to bottom, right to left because of it's Japanese origin.
